Kohli is a rare talent, says Gary Kirsten

Hyderabad  :   Former India coach Gary Kirsten always had the belief that the immensely talented Virat Kohli will grow into a "great cricketer" and the South African considers himself fortunate to have been a part of that process.

"I always had a different kind of feeling when I started working with Virat Kohli. From the beginning, I was very sure that he was a rare talent and would become a great player. He grew massively in these past few years and has matured a lot. I was fortunate to be part of that process of seeing him grow and that give me immense pleasure," said Kirsten.

Asked whether Kohli be able to step into Sachin Tendulkar's shoes once the legend calls time on his illustrious career spanning close to two and a half decades, Kirsten was very cautious about his choice of words.

"I have always been very careful about appointing someone in that place (Tendulkar's replacement). It's a very dangerous position and very risky to name anyone. That's something that you guys (media) do but I won't do that.

"All I can say is that Kohli is a fantastic batsman whom the opposition bowlers are finding it difficult to get out. The teams nowadays do a lot of planning to get him out," he said.

I will not change my natural instinct which is to be aggressive, says Virat Kohli

New Delhi :  India's explosive batsman Virat Kohli on Wednesday said there is nothing wrong in being aggressive on the field and sees no reason for changing his approach, the criticism by some former cricketers notwithstanding.

Kohli, who captained India to a 5-0 whitewash of Zimbabwe in the one-day series recently, was criticised by former cricketers and commentators and they wanted him to shed his hyperactive demeanour.

Reacting to the 24-year-old Delhi player's angry reactions and arguments with the on-field umpires after he was given out by the third umpire in the second One-Day International (ODI) July 26 in Harare, the former stalwarts said he should change his attitude, more so as he was the captain.

"The criticism has been with me for a long time and I had said before that I do not intend to cross the line at any point of time. But I will not change my natural instinct which is to be aggressive as it helps me to focus and concentrate on my game," he told IANS on the sidelines of a promotional event Cinthol Challenge Virat.

"Crossing the line is not on at all and I wouldn't do it at any point of time. But when you have an emotional overflow, you tend to make a mistake. I am human and not a machine. Everyone makes mistakes and the point is we must learn from and not repeat them."

The Zimbabwe tour was the first one where he was designated as captain for the entire series.

"Being a captain is a very different experience, there is a lot at stake. It is probably the biggest post in sports in our country so obviously it comes with a lot of pressure and responsibility. I really enjoy each and every moment of it. It brings a lot of challenges along with it and I want to live up to them. I have enjoyed my stint," said Kohli, who also leads the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The regular India vice-captain added that a series against minnows like Zimbabwe is as important as any other.

"A lot of players benefited from the series, many of them getting the opportunity after being in the dressing room for two-three months. They had to get some games and in international cricket even if you score runs in a side game, it boosts your confidence."

"Scoring runs and getting wickets in any game gives you confidence and everyone realises that. I think the series was as important as any other and it is for the individual how prepares for it."

MS Dhoni hard to contact when on a holiday, says Virat Kohli

New Delhi : Star batsman Virat Kohli on Wednesday said the tips he picked up from skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the West Indies proved beneficial for him while leading a young Indian team in Zimbabwe, where they inflicted a 5-0 series whitewash on the hosts.

Kohli had captained the Indian side in three One-dayers in the West Indies when Dhoni was sidelined after hurting his hamstring in the first match of the tri-nation series.

"He (Dhoni) is a guy who doesn't say much. But I keep talking to him about different situations and what I could do and how should I keep myself calm in pressure situations while captaining the side. It helped me chatting to him in the West Indies when he wasn't playing and I was captaining the side. All the tips he gave me really helped me," Kohli said when asked about Dhoni's influence on him as a leader.

India recorded their first-ever ODI series whitewash on the foreign soil when they trounced Zimbabwe 5-0.

Kohli said he has not been able to speak to Dhoni after Zimbabwe win since Dhoni is presently enjoying a break.

"When he goes away for a holiday it is very hard to contact him. I tried to message him on the phone but I couldn't reach. I guess I'll be seeing him soon and speak to him about it (Zimbabwe win)," Kohli told reporters on the sidelines of a promotional event here.
